Saved By The Bell: The New School
I was a big fan of the old school Saved By the Bell and was pretty ambivalent about the reboot especially when I heard the OG cast would have limited roles. However the more I heard about the reboot, the more it piqued my curiosity. Finally over Thanksgiving my curiosity got the better of me and I’m really glad it did. The new school was actually quite enjoyable and I didn’t miss the old school as much as I thought I would. The show does a great job of forming its own identity while still paying homage to the Bayside OG’s. Even with Jessie(Elizabeth Berkley) and Slater (Mario Lopez) being full time cast members, it didn’t overshadow the new class. They did a a really job of blending in and passing the torch so to speak. Even when the full OG cast is back together they don’t dominate or overshadow the new school. I even love how they made Lexi trans, just like her real life portrayer, Josie Totah. One thing I did not like was the dumb as rocks but hella cute and super sweet jock trope they stuck Jamie Spano with, who is portrayed effortlessly by Belmont Cameli. That character archetype is so played out. I hope that they do better by this character because his stupidity stops being cute and just becomes outright annoying. It seems the powers that be also came to that realization and decide to focus more on his awesome sweetness. Thankfully. Zack and Kelly’s son Mac Morris (Mitchell Hoog) also was a bit too stereotypical. I loved the Daisy’s character portrayed by Haskiri Velasquez. But I think my two of my favorite characters were Aisha (Alycia Pascual-Pena) and Devante ( Dexter Darden). Overall I would love to see a second season and continued growth of the show and it’s characters.
