Skating On Silver Spooned Ice

So walking out of my K-Drama world for a while, I found this movie on Netflix that seemed interesting about thieves on skates. It was a Russian-speaking movie that changed to English with a British accent once I put on the dubs. I am starting to realize that tv isn’t the same without subtitles now because I’ve been doing it for a while.

Silver Skates is about a petty thief with a heart of gold and a high society aristocrat’s daughter falling in love and having to fight against the system to be together. It is an age-old story of a poor man falling for a lonely rich girl who is just the opposite of her whole family.

Alisa is the daughter of one of the richest aristocratic families in St. Petersburg. She is smart, inquisitive, and kind but also very naïve about the world outside. Matvey comes from a completely different world. He worked as a delivery man for a restaurant before he was unfairly fired. He ends up joining a gang of pickpocketers run by the charismatic Alex. Alex sees something in Matvey when they first meet and decides to train him in the career of being a pickpocket. Alex is what we would call an honest gentlemen thief of the 21st century.

This movie was definitely enjoyable. It was the bourgeoisie vs. the proletariats. It was definitely cliché and common in its troupes but I still was entertained from beginning to end. The antics and acrobatics of the gang evading the cops while skating around St. Petersburg robbing people in 1900 definitely had its WOW factors.

Throughout the movie, they kept mentioning that they were in the 21st century where the poor wanted things to change but the aristocrats wanted things to stay the same. I mean who would want to lose their power and elitism that they never had to work for a day in their lives. Every decision that was made by these old white men was focused on keeping the poor in their “place”. But I digress……

I would definitely recommend this movie. It was entertaining and romantic and exciting at times. I would just say make sure you focus on the family dynamics and the conversations which will have you thinking about society, gender, and class. It is not a deep dive into these topics but they are trickled in throughout the movie. Please stay for the skating skills of these thieves and their amazing ship-home. If you are looking for a simple movie, this is it. I say ENJOY!!!!!
