The Daily Wine Down (11-20)
DuVernay, Dawson, DC, & DMZ
HBO Max has picked up DMZ for a limited series run. DMZ is based on a comic of the same name about life in a post-apocalyptic New York which has been transformed into a demilitarized zone after a civil war in the US. DMZ is produced by Ava DuVernay and will star Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt. Honestly, I had never heard of this comic until I heard Ava DuVernay was adapting it. It seems really interesting and different which seems par for the course for Ava. She doesn’t do run of the mill. Filing this in the “most definitely, can’t wait category.” (Variety)
Now It's Disney's Turn
After WB’s Wonder Woman decision, Disney is now considering moving some of its scheduled family releases such as Cruella, Peter Pan, and Pinocchio to Disney+. No decisions have been made yet. One of the biggest decisions seems to be whether to Mulan or not to Mulan? Meaning are they going to charge an additional fee on top of the subscription in order to watch these films or just offer it as part of the service such as they’re doing with Soul. You already know my vote. I get the theater situation is uncertain even, going into next year, but I’m not sure how I feel about the studios moving their movies to streaming. I pray this is not going to become the new normal for movie theaters. But something tells me that industry is in even more trouble than we realize. (Deadline)
Barry Jenkins Teases The Underground
We’re getting closer to the much-anticipated release of The Underground Railroad. And by much closer I mean we got another teaser from Barry Jenkins. Amazon still has not released a firm release date. We also have Amazon’s official synopsis.
“The limited series chronicles young Cora’s (Thuso Mbedu) journey as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. After escaping her Georgia plantation for the rumored Underground Railroad, Cora discovers no mere metaphor, but an actual railroad full of engineers and conductors, and a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil.”
I guess we’ll be okay with the baby steps as we inch ever closer to the premiere. (Indiewire)
Awkwafina's "Swan Song"
Awkwafina is joining Mahershela Ali and Naomie Harris in Apple TV+’s Swan Song, which is described as a genre-bending romantic drama set in the near future. Sounds interesting. I wrote about this show a while back and you had me at Mahershela Ali so I am still in and the more I hear about the show the more I want to stay. File this in the definitely can’t wait category. (Slashfilm)
Waiting For Another Reboot
In the latest classic movie to be rebooted file we have Waiting to Exhale. Yes, the same movie which starred Whitney Houston, Angela Basset, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Divine. It’s being turned into a TV series, produced by Lee Daniels (Empire). I am on the fence about this. This is one of those movies that was perfect the way it was and didn’t need anything else. But I guess it would be good for a new generation. It has potential??? Filing this in the ”wait & see” file. (Deadline)
You Play Too Much
I was exctied about James Bond finally getting an origin story. Until….I found out it was in a fucking video game. Are you kidding me? If anyone deserves a real origin story portrayed on screen, it’s James MFing Bond. Your honor, I object to this Bond blasphemy. As an aspiring novice gamer, I love video games. But this here is a travesty of epic proportions. Developing an on-screen origin story would his would solve a lot of problems of who should be the next Bond. Tell an origin story, and reboot the entire series. Or at least make it a tv series (Slashfilm)
