Country That Looks Black Like Me

This week the spotlight shines on Grammy-nominated, rising country music star Mickey Guyton. I am a huge country music fan, I don’t think it’s possible to grow up in Texas and not be or at least develop an appreciation for country music. I am really happy to see more and more black artists shine in the genre. and doing so while pointing out that country music for too long has been a Good Ole (White) Boys Club. Mickey features prominently as one of those artists. She was very vocal and in the forefront of calling Morgan Wallen out on his racist non-sense. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 She has also been pointed about calling out gender disparities in her music (“What Are You Gonna Tell Her)” not only in country music but in society at large. She made history with her recent Grammy nomination. She was the first female solo artist to be nominated in a Country music category. She’s made a name for herself with limited spins on country radio (wonder why that its?).

Mickey Guyton has a beautiful voice and I look forward to hearing from her for years to come. We will definitely feature more minority country artists here on Wine Down Radio. In the meantime enjoy some of our favorite Mickey Guyton tunes below.

Also included her Tiny Desk Performance; “Black Like Me” (Grammy’s); and A Live Version of “What Are You Gonna Tell Her:.

On Repeat:

  • Black Like Me (Jimmie Allen)

  • Drunk & I Miss You

  • Cross Country (BRELAND)

  • What Are You Gonna Tell Her?

  • Why Baby Why
