We Were Pleasantly Surprised

Eddie’s Take

I was pleasantly surprised by BlackPink’s debut album. The title leaves a bit to be desired. The Album? Seriously? I wasn’t sure what to think going in. I am not a “Blink”. That’s what BlackPink fans call themselves and had decided based on the lead off single ‘How You Like That’ (not my favorite song), that I was not interested. Then I heard ‘Ice Cream’ featuring Selena Gomez and that bop changed my mind. Add to that the Cardi B featured joint ‘Bet You Wanna’ and I was sold. Other standouts include ‘Pretty Savage’ and ‘Lovesick Girls’(see video below). Although the ladies have often been referred to as the female version of BTS, this is an unfair comparison to both groups. BlackPink stands on their own and I think this album goes a long way to prove that. I found myself wishing that at a run time of only 24 minutes, it was a bit longer.

Tammy’s Take

So I listened to the new BlackPink album called ‘The Album’ which I will honestly say is a very disappointing name. Like Eddie, I am definitely not a ‘Blink’ but I do agree that they have talent. And they have done an amazing job growing their brand internationally. The Album only has 8 songs and I only enjoyed 4 of them. I have been a fan of ‘How You Like That’ which always sounds good to me. ‘Ice Cream’ featuring Selena Gomez was very catchy and cutesy. Although I feel like the more I listen to it, the less I want to. My new favorite BlackPink song is ‘Lovesick Girls’ which I would definitely play as I was getting ready to go out with the girls except…..COVID. Another song I enjoyed listening to was ‘Love to Hate Me’. What surprised me was that I was not a fan of the song featuring my girl Cardi B. That was forgettable. By the end of the ‘The Album’ I was pleasantly surprised but disheartened that it didn’t turn me into a true Blink and it ain’t looking good.
