Eddie’s 2💩2💩 Headlines
1. 2020 Is A Whole Mood
My top story of the year is 2020 itself. This year is definitely one for the history books. They will be able to teach a whole class about the year that was 2020. So much has happened in just this year alone. It seems like an entire decade or decades’ worth of events has been unleashed into one year. Below I have featured some of my other top stories of the year. All of them could have been the top story in other year. It was really hard to rank them, even as I write this.
2. Those We Loved and Lost
This year started off with the tragic loss of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and several others in a terrible helicopter crash. I remember that day being so surreal. Somehow my thoughts teetered between please let this be the worst thing to happen to damn 2020 is already on that bullshit to what’s next?
We also lost a real-life superhero in Chadwick Boseman. He was probably best known for his role in Black Panther. It seemed like his star was just starting to rise and shine and the rest of the world could see what those of us who had been fans since his All My Children, Lincoln Heights days already knew… He was an amazing talent and even better human being.
This year also brought about the loss of a true warrior for justice in the late Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Notorious RBG as she was affectionately known was a women’s right icon, a social justice warrior and an all-around force to be reckoned with. She will forever be missed.
Rest in Power not only to these three phenomenal human beings but all of those we have lost this year whether they were household names or not. The
3. Rona
The thing that ruined or at least made us reimagine all of our lives in 2020 is next on the list. This could and probably should be the # 1 story of the year as it has defined this entire year. It has defined the world and this year in many ways most of them not good. But I don’t want to give it more power than it has already stolen from us.
#4 Life Does Indeed Go On
In many ways this was the year of BTS. Their popularity skyrocketed. They ruled the charts and album sales, all during a pandemic. They have accomplished so much from countless magazine covers to releasing their first all-English single “Dynamite” to their first Grammy nomination and everything in between. They showed that it is possible to thrive during these most shitty times. Thye’ve inspired us to reimagine our goals and how to keep going on just like life in even the worst of circumstances. It’s okay to be down and even out for a bit but it’s not okay to wallow. Here are some highlights of their year.
#5 Out With Old In With The New
Thank goodness we will have new administration in just a few weeks. It seems like the election was years ago and not mere weeks. And of the weeks until the Inaugration will seem just as long. But at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It was historic when Joe Biden named Kamala Harris as his running mate. But it was even more historic when they won the election and she became the first woman, woman of color (African /Asian American) woman to be elected to the second-highest office in the land. I know they are going to have their work cut out for them, cleaning up after four years of pure ________________ . I have literally run out of words for this Trump disaster. But I do look forward to 46 and a return to political “normalcy”. Although I don’t know if we can full go back.
#6. Oh So Scandalous
There have been so many scandals over the last four years involving the Trump Administration it’s too hard and too many to keep count. One of the biggest ones from this year, again it seems like a lifetime ago. One of the biggest scandals of the year for this administration was the impeachment. While one branch of Congress did its duty another failed miserably.
#7. Warner Brothers Upends The Movie Industry
In its quest to make HBO Max a legit streaming service Warner Brothers may have single-handedly been the death knell to the movie industry by releasing its entire slate of movies for 2021 on HBO Max the same day they’re released in theaters. Needless to say many in the industry were NOT happy about this. WB swears this is just a 2021 move since
#8 The Long Hot Summer
If you aren’t careful history will repeat itself. Well, this was definitely the year that it seems the entirety of history came back to repeat itself. The catalyst was the George Floyd murder and culminated in a redux of the summer of 1968. The protests over his death and that of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. The irony of it all is if weren’t for Rona people would not have been paying as much attention. But people were and it seems many have started to understand what people of color and minorities have been saying for a long time.
#9 Push For Diversity
This year was about diversity and inclusion. It seems the reckoning has come and many are starting to realize that it’s beyond time for diversity and inclusiveness. The Oscars announced new guidelines for diversity. There have been calls for diversity and inclusion throughout every industry. Here’s hoping this is not simply lipservice
#10 Welcome To The Major Leagues
Major League Baseball finally did the right thing and called up the entire Negro League to the Majors. All Negro League Stats will now be integrated into MLB stats. It’s a step I guess. although it still doesn’t change the fact that most of these players should have played in MLB on their own merits.
I love all things pop culture and entertainment.
