In honor of what would have been his 82nd birthday (Apr.2) we are celebrating the greatness that is Marvin Gaye, inarguably one of the best singer-songwriters of all time. He is one of those artists I wish I could have experienced and seen live for myself. He had a once-in-a-lifetime voice. His buttery smooth vocals could make anything and I do mean anything sound good. His rendition of the National Anthem is one of the best ever. Yup, you can quote me on that and check it out below if you don’t believe me. It was controversial at the time in 1983 when he sang it at the NBA All-Star game. Before Gaye, not many dared change the song and put their own spin to it. During the 60s and 70s, he sang some of the best protest songs of the movement, “Mercy Mercy Me”, “Inner City Blues,” and “What’s Going On” just to name a few. To those of us born after the Motown generation and who were fortunate enough to experience his greatness live, we probably know him through his classic “Let’s Get It On”, which has been featured in movies, tv shows, and commercials. It is arguably one of his biggest hits and was also called one of the sexiest songs of all time. Marvin Gaye tragically died one day before his 45th birthday after being shot by his father, leaving behind a brilliant musical legacy.
